Cruel Summer

It’s shaping up to be another cruel summer in Montreal — and not because of the humidity or the rising price of air conditioners. No, this year’s suffering comes courtesy of 𝖪̶𝗈̶𝗃̶𝖺̶𝗄̶  Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes, who somehow managed to spend an entire offseason doing… well, whatever the opposite of addressing this team's weaknesses is. Or perhaps he was on an extended fishing trip- if so, I think it's fair to say that he came back with a handful of sardines (with only but the trout and the salmon celebrating his ineptitude).

If the Habs needed a right‑handed defenseman, a legitimate center, and some size on the bottom two lines, Hughes responded with the enthusiasm of a teenager asked to clean his room: a shrug, a promise to “get to it,” and absolutely nothing ever happening. And the Montreal media gladly clapped like the seals at SeaWorld, playing their classic tune with the same familiar lyrics of "There is no need to rush things" and "They are still young, this will take more time".

But amongst more savvy fans, I guarantee you patience is wearing thinner than a Leafs playoff lead in May (don't worry, soon they won't be the only laughing stocks in Canada)....

Meanwhile, the rest of the division has been acting like it’s Black Friday at the local Rousseau hockey store. The Florida Panthers added key pieces like they were building a championship Lego set (and oddly enough they paid peanuts in return for a bona fide star like Brady Tkachuk- yet the Habs perpetually tell us the cost to acquire a legit top 6 F would cost us an arm, a couple of legs, and something in between both).

The Toronto Maple Leafs — yes, those annoying Leafs — actually improved their roster as well, adding grit to the bottom lines (Duhaime and Sissons would have been nice here), and a couple of solid puck-moving D (oh yeah, and that McKenna kid doesn't look too shabby either). And the Cup Champions, the Carolina Hurricanes, remain a well‑oiled machine that looks like it was assembled in a secret lab (hopefully not Wuhan). Out West, teams like Anaheim and San Jose are building budding superpower teams.

But les Canadiens de Montreal? Well all we got are vibes (Good vibes, apparently). Development vibes. “Trust the plan” vibes. A content fan base, bellies completely full (with Kool aid).

Unfortunately, vibes don’t win playoff rounds. And youth and hope alone feel like empty promises way out into the future.

It’s becoming a familiar pattern over here: overpromise, underdeliver, rinse and repeat, until fans lose feeling in their faces. Hughes and Gorton talked a big game at the season-ending presser, but the roster still looks like a Jenga tower missing many crucial building blocks. And somehow, despite all this, yet again, a chunk of the local media is happily buying the snake oil the Canadiens management and PR department are once again serving up.

You’d think after years of rebuild slogans, “patience,” and “next year,” someone would ask why the team still can’t find a right‑shot defenseman without using Google Maps. But not here, not in this town. Settling seems to be the name of the game.

Let's go with another season of pressing Suzy, Mike and Lane (add the centerless orphan Demidov to the list this season) like old Eureka lemons, and hoping Dobes can once again stand on his head. Pull up the rrrrrim to win, let's hope Lady Luck bails us out.....(and maybe porcelain man- David Reinbacher- will finally pan out).

Fans aren’t asking for miracles, folks — just progress. A sense of urgency. Just a measly sign that management sees the same issues everyone with a bit of commonsense does.

Instead, we’re left with déjà vu, unfulfilled promises, and a cruel summer that feels suspiciously like last summer… the kind that hurts more than what Daniel LaRusso went through, getting crane‑kicked, chased by a dirt‑bike gang, thrown off a cliff (and somehow still had to wax cars for free). Meanwhile Kent Hughes is out here doing absolutely nothing, and it somehow feels like we’re now the ones getting a roundhouse kick to the face by Cobra Kai....
